I’m fired because I use twitter?

First of all it’s a question mark in the title, I’m not fired. But if you’re not careful, you could be! It’s been a long time since I started using twitter (http://herebeforeyou.com/ploem) and it’s the first time I’m thinking of protecting my updates. A couple of weeks ago we had a little incident at work which was a consequence of tweets posted by several employees (including me) about a certain suppliers service. Couple of days ago I read two very alike tweets of people who had similar experiences, one which resulted in almost losing the job.

I think everybody should decide for himself whether to protect his twitter account or not. Just know if you don’t

…your tweets will appear in a public timeline which anyone has access to (and yes, you’d be surprised but suppliers, clients, management,… read these kinda things whether coincidencial or on purpose).

…your tweets can be found months, even years after you posted them

…maybe after you’ve deleted them they were picked up on other sites too (facebook etc).

…they will appear in twitter’s search results so it’s not that hard to find out who said something about anyone/anything

If you choose not to protect your account (maybe after you’ve read L4X9’s article), maybe these tips can help you not to get fired;)

1) never post critics or inside information (or anything that can be interpreted as critics/secret info) about your own work environment (colleagues, managers, products, company,..)

2) in any way don’t ever post something that can jeopardize the company’s or/and your relationships with suppliers, clients, consultants, providers,…

3) Stay positive!! Positive is good. People will even appreciate your support.

(In addition - protect my updates on twitter)

We’ll be back shortly

In great honour of Twitter’s Fail Whale we at Televic Education made our own Edumatic Fail Birdies:

Read and parse an atom feed in flash

I just wrote a tutorial on how to parse an atom feed in flash. I used the twitter search API for my jesus on twitter example. Find out how I did it!

Search for Jesus on Twitter via Atom Feed

Some little wtf-project, making use of the twitter search API and reading & parsing an Atom Feed into Flash (or Flex) (Actionscript3).

The results are sometimes fun to read, here are some tweets that passed in just a couple of minutes:

Jesus, what’s wrong with you?”
Jesus had weed carriers — they were called disciples back then ROFL”
Jesus dude, hope youre doing fine”
Jesus Christ. That four hour nap at 6 pm was not a good thing”
“I bet Jesus is Tupac’s nigga. Bet he got to Heaven and was all like, “Whaddup my nigga!?” And Jesus was like, “Whaddup my nigga!!”

Where are you? Where are my friends?

Following twitter - what are you doing right now, now we have brightkite - where are you right now? You can sign up at http://www.brightkite.com. Right now, it’s in beta. It works with invites, I still have some left if someone is interested.

You can check in all over the world, and tell your friends where you are right now. You can have updates on your friends on mobile (USA only I guess) and mail. You can post notes and/or photos with your location. If this takes off, this is gonna be a number one social networking app, specially with the iphone we have now - and more will have in the short future. You can see who checked in close to you, let’s say in the area (4km) or neighbourhood (2km), block (200meters) or very close (20meters). A really cool feature that is. You can also see what’s happening around you.

It’s still in beta, so brightkite developers if you read this, here’s one thing I’d like to see implemented. Would it be possible if 3 friends are on the exact same location(e.g work) , to view them all 3 on the map, now you can only see one. Or at least indicate there’s more then one friend on that location. This is somewhat the point of the app I guess, to see who’s close to you. Ok you can state that you should now if someone is in the exact same place as yourself, but that’s not always the case.

You can always add Ploem as a friend. But right now, I wish this:

A relaxing holiday at Honolulu…*dreams*
